Docstoc Launches One Click Large Document Transfer

Keywords: , , , , , , , ,

DocstocDocument sharing service Docstoc is out with a potentially major upgrade today. The new functionality is called OneClick and allows you to share documents via email no matter how large the files are. I’ve embedded a video that describes the service below. OneClick is a simple desktop widget that you select when you have large documents to share. After the documents are uploaded to Docstoc, the OneClick application opens your default email application and puts the links directly into the email. It’s really simple to use.

Adam Ostrow notes that this new utility will help drive user adoption of Docstoc and I completely agree - this is why I noted that it’s a major upgrade above. Not only will this drive user adoption, it will also help Docstoc to increase their keyword rich content index. While it appears that documents uploaded with OneClick show as private by default, Docstoc would be smart to push users to change the privacy settings on their next login.

The only filetypes that are supported with Docstoc’s OneClick are .doc, .pdf, .xls, .ppt. This may limit the tool’s functionality as other large file email replacement tools like YouSendIt allow you to send any file type. Will the casual user know when to use DocStoc and when not to? Mark Hendrickson has the same concerns regarding file type. Frankly they should allow any file type to be uploaded and just show the files as a list rather than showing them in the Docstoc player. That’d be hot.

The document sharing battle between Scribd and Docstoc is great to watch as it’s forcing both to continue to innovate and that’s a good thing for all of us. Check out our interview with Docstoc CEO Jason Nazar.

Nuclear Elephant:’s super iPhone wipe to protect your data when you trade up to the next iPhone :)

Since my posts regarding the iPhone restore mode being insufficient for wiping data (and Apple’s own refurbishing process also being insufficient), many have emailed me asking for instructions on how to properly wipe personal data off of the iPhone. I’ve been very quiet about how to properly lift data in a forensic manner, as my goal is to avoid seeing a bunch of evidence erasers pop up in the wild (I’ve already been approached by Symantec about this). What I will share, however, is the way in which I wipe my own devices before I resell them, which I believe the consumer has a right to do. Mind you, I make no guarantees about this and accept no responsibility for you hosing your iPhone. This is what works for me.

Graphing Social Patterns Day 2 Recap - I Won a Wad of Cash!

Keywords: , , , , , , , , ,

Graphing Social PatternsToday was day 2 of Graphing Social Patterns East. I attended a majority of the sessions, moderated a panel and also met more awesome CN readers. I think Dave McClure did a great job in leading the overall conference. He was approachable all day, greeted many of the conference attendees and kept things moving basically on-time. One of the techniques Dave used was to play funny and viral videos between each session. Since the sessions were all in the same room, it was a great break between the sessions and lightened the mood quite a bit, especially with the miserable heat outside!

The one thing the conference seems to be missing is buzz, excitement and chatter. The media/press room was basically empty except for Adam Ostrow of Mashable. Maybe it’s the fact that all the sessions are in the same room but the conversations and typical high energy just seem to be missing here (maybe it’s the heat). It seems more like a training session atmosphere. Nothing like the photos and videos from the GSP on the West coast.

Kent Schoen - Facebook

Kent was supposed to lead a discussion about "Facebook Business and Marketing Solutions" but to me it felt more like, "Facebook Stats Showoff." Kent noted that Facebook ads will always be unique and social in nature. Basically he explained that the benefit of buying ads on Facebook is that your ads will be seen by your friends and they can then interact with the ad and spread it to their friends, etc.

Here are some of the stats and updates he shared:

  • Four times the invites sent on eVite are sent on Facebook monthly (16m vs 66m)
  • Over 150,000 pages have been created and 85,000,000 fans have signed up to the available pages.

Hooman Radfar - Clearspring CEO

Hooman spoke about widgets in general during his discussion. I liked his definition of a "social application" = "widget plus a canvas plus the ability to push socially and virally." One thing he said that I agree with is that analytics and tracking is the key for a successful social campaign. I see way too many companies investing in social media without any measurement. It’s like throwing money down the drain.

Hooman closed by speaking about cross-promotion of widgets and social applications and how it’s one of the keys for success. He explained that Slide and RockYou can launch a new widget or social app and receive immediate users because they can cross promote it into the apps that are already in use.

Evening Party

Tonight’s party was put on by the SocialTimes and SocialCash. Josh at ReadWriteWeb has some info on Social Cash today. The party was held at a very upscale sushi club (wtf?) and the crowd was hopping. The place was jam-packed and the conversation was good. I finally got to meet Chris Saad of the DataPortability project and Sean Ammirati of ReadWriteTalk and mSpoke.

As I was leaving, the folks at SocialCash handed me a bag - which looks similar to a "loot" bag I remember getting as a kid. Inside the bag was a t-shirt (who wants it, email me!), a credit card which apparently is used to cash out the rewards you earn on SocialCash. Also in the bag was $1 dollar bills - 100 of them!!! Damn. I am waiting for confirmation from SocialCash but I may have been given the "winning" bag with all of the loot inside. Somehow I am thinking each of the 100 bags were supposed to contain a $1 bill. I will update this post once I receive confirmation. Check out the photo below for confirmation.

SnagIt 9!

Keywords: , , , , , , , ,

In case you hadn’t heard, TechSmith released the newest version of SnagIt June 10, 2008. I have been playing with it for a while, and thought I would share my thoughts and loves with you.

Many of you know I love SnagIt. This version makes me love it even more!

Let me count the ways:

  1. New interface - They have ribbonized the SnagIt Editor. Now, many of you are thinking, “No, please, don’t”. Try it before you hate it. The new interface for the editor is really slick looking:

  2. Multiple image edit - You can have multiple images open for edit at the same time. Makes for a much better work flow when you need to merge images together.
  3. New process - You no longer have to close the editor when you are taking multiple shots or working with multiple images. Leave it open along with the main interface and you can pretty much have instant access to any part of the tool set you need.
  4. OneClick Capture - Turn it on and click where you want to take your shot. Almost as cool as timed captures. Integrated library - a task pane leads you directly to the shots you have taken, whether they are currently open or closed. Don’t want something in the library? Show the library, select the image, and delete it with the delete button from your keyboard

  5. Flags - You can now flag your images to make it easier to find them. There are 10 flags you can apply, plus you can attach your own keywords to the images.

  6. Fancier effects - You are going to have to play with this yourself to believe it, but the shapes, arrows, text, and everything else look even better than ever!
  7. Convert images from the editor - Instead of creating an image, saving it, then using the batch tools to convert it, you can now convert from the editor any image or images you want. No leaving the editor and coming back in to check your work.
  8. Instant access to Accessories and Stamps - Download a new accessory or stamp from the site and it is immediately available to you in the editor.
  9. New editing interface and tools for videos - Yeah, it got ribbonized too. But even better, videos go in the same editor interface as images. So, you can be working with still images and video images at the same time. You can still only save them as AVIs, but they are much easier to work with!

Now, it’s your turn….

Tell me what you think of the new SnagIt. Download it from the TechSmith site and play around with it. Post a comment telling us all what you find the most useful change and why. Believe me, I have only listed my top 10. There are many more changes and improvements that you will find as you play.

Why would you want to post back your additions? Because, thanks to Betsy Weber of TechSmith, I have two keys for SnagIt 9 to give away. A week from now, I will pick from the two winners from the posted comments and get them their keys. (That means that you need to be sure to put your email address in the comment form so that I can get the key to you. No one else will see your email address other than me and I will not keep it unless you tell me to.)

Bonus: If you decide to blog or otherwise web-write about the new SnagIt, this post, and the contest, let me know. I might just have an extra drawing for all of you!
