Data Deluge and a Startup’s Glassdoor

Keywords: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

These days, we are deluged with data, and as a result we’re confusing noise with information, and information with useful information. But what many companies fail to realize is that what matters is what you do with that data — and as a result, they are missing out on a tremendous opportunity.

Yesterday was one of those days when I was dragging my feet, mostly because I stayed up way past my bedtime for the launch of NewTeeVee Station and then woke up at my usual time — before sunrise. The foggy state of my brain reinforced how necessary sleep is for connecting the dots and being productive. With the sun shining brightly, a walk along the Embarcadero to the office seemed like the perfect antidote. As Celine Roque writes on WebWorkerDaily, “Being exposed to ... Read More

Linux is Greener, But Efficient Servers Are MIA

Linux was just deemed greener than Windows Server 2008 when running as the operating system for servers — a good 12 percent more efficient. Now that might not sound like much, but the same research also drove home just how difficult it is to get servers to run efficiently. So don’t scoff, and all […]

Evan sent in this classic hack for turning a television into an oscilloscope-esque wave visualization device.
Caution - this project is strictly for those with experience working with mains supplies and properly discharging the voltage stored in television electronics!

I’ve personally had successful results with small portable battery-operated TVs. - Censtron Wave Vessel

Nokia Launches Mobile Advertising Alliance — Can They Own Apple In Advertising Space?

Keywords: , , , , , ,

NokiaIn February Nokia launched their mobile ad network.  Today Nokia is announcing the Nokia Advertising Alliance which will attempt to make mobile advertising easier for brand advertisers. The alliance brings together the many phases of mobile advertising: planning, executing, and tracking.

Perhaps this is one way that Nokia can compete with Apple - mobile advertising. If they can win over brands and their advertising money, will they want to push Nokia devices so consumers and their customer base can view and interact with their advertising messaging?

The Advertising Alliance is made up of two parts (from the release):

  • The Nokia Media Network which gives reach to millions of mobile consumers through advertising on more than 100 blue-chip mobile publishers, operator partners and Nokia properties.
  • Nokia Interactive Solutions that creates end-to-end, high performance mobile campaigns for brands from banner ads, mobile internet sites and location finders to mobile coupons, click-to-call and other advanced mobile mechanics.

Four companies have been announced as launch members of the Alliance: i-movo, Mobile Acuity, Mobiqa, and uLocate. More will be named soon.

Nokia - go own mobile advertising - Apple certainly isn’t thinking about it.

BizTalk Server 2006 R3 Timeline and Features

Keywords: , , , , , , , , ,

If you are interested in using BizTalk Server with the launch wave of 2008 products like the latest .NET Framework, SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008, you will need to wait just a little longer. BizTalk Server 2006 R3 will be following just after the 2008 wave of releases. This updated version of BizTalk Server will be designed for the latest versions of Windows Server, the .NET Framework, Visual Studio, and SQL Server.

Along with support for the 2008 wave of products, the product team is looking to give more updates on specific features in the coming months. They are planning some new investments in the release that includes:

  • New web service registry capabilities with support for UDDI (Universal Description Discovery and Integration) version 3.0
  • Enhanced service enablement of applications (through new and enhanced adapters for LOB applications, databases, and legacy/host systems)
  • Enhanced service enablement of “edge” devices through BizTalk RFID Mobile
  • Enhanced interoperability and connectivity support for B2B protocols (like SWIFT, EDI, etc)
  • SOA patterns and best practices guidance to assist our customer’s implementations

The news features are very exciting. The product team is currently working to ensure existing BizTalk Server (BTS) applications continue to work without changes. They are taking an incremental approach and limiting the changes to the items listed above. This release build will be on existing bits, so the name of this will be BizTalk Server 2006 R3. Refreshing the bits (instead of applying a large Service Pack) provides for the best update experience.

The product team tells us that we should expect to see a CTP of BizTalk Server 2006 R3 later this year (with an RTM planned in H1 CY09).

Why Cloud Computing Needs Security

Startups, unable to bear the brunt of online criminal activity, could start looking to cloud computing — the providers of which have the capacity and infrastructure to survive an attack — for salvation. The clouds, however, are going to have to step up their game.

Bribery, extortion and other con games have found new life online. Today, botnets threaten to take vendors down; scammers seduce the unsuspecting on dating sites; and new viruses encrypt your hard drive’s contents, then demand money in return for the keys. Startups, unable to bear the brunt of criminal activity, might look to the clouds for salvation: After all, big cloud computing providers have the capacity and infrastructure to survive an attack. But the clouds need to step it up; otherwise, their single ... Read More

When it comes to your security, no web browser is perfect - and no malware app is going to catch everything. I came across BufferZone Free a few weeks ago and have been running it since, and I’m pretty impressed. BufferZone adds another layer of protection to your browser by setting up a sandbox (an isolated “virtual directory” on your hard drive). As Trustware puts it, the program “transparently redirects modifications in your PC to a virtual, isolated environment, so that ... Read More

TechShop in the LA Times

Keywords: , , , , , ,

Congrats to our pals at TechShop for the article about them in yesterday’s LA Times.

Since opening in October 2006, TechShop has attracted 300 members, each paying $100 a month for hands-on access to the sophisticated tools. The operation also sells supplies and charges for classes.

“It’s like a health club,” said TechShop founder Jim Newton, a former science advisor for the TV show “Myth Busters.” “But instead of exercise equipment, we have welders and laser cutters and sheet-metal equipment.”

Now TechShop is poised to expand. Newton, 45, plans to open 11 additional locations in the coming year. Soon, TechShops may appear in markets as diverse as Austin, Texas; Orlando, Fla.; and Los Angeles.

Windows CE: How to buy Windows CE or Platform Builder

Keywords: , , , , , , , ,
With so many Microsoft products it is very easy to purchase a license. But how do you by Windows CE? If you want to purchase Windows Vista, you would go to a store (either bricks or clicks) and by the DVD installation and off you are running. That just isn’t the way Windows CE works.
Windows CE is not a typical off the shelf operating system; it is an operating system for embedded computers. So what is an embedded computer? An embedded computer is a special purpose computer that has custom software running on it. How does Microsoft fit into that? Microsoft developed an operating system that can be customized by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) which is Windows CE.
To purchase Windows CE, you will first need to purchase the development tools so that you can create a custom Windows CE OS. The development tools are commonly known as Platform Builder. Microsoft has more formal names depending on the version. The demand for Platform Builder is probably fairly low compared to other Microsoft products, so you won’t find Platform Builder on the shelf at the local Big Box store, or even online stores.
You will need to start a relationship with a Microsoft Distributor. You can start this process by visiting Microsoft Authorized Embedded Distributor Search where you will first select the area of the world that best fits your location. Keep in mind that the typical user of Platform Builder is an OEM, so the expectation is that you will soon be shipping products that will require a Windows CE license sticker, so this relationship will come in handy.
